A Rare Find I connected with and loved this movie far beyond I expected. First, the fact that this is a movie you can safely watch with anyone—no propaganda, no politics, no religious views, no LGBT themes, no kissing or sex. Which is very rare in movies right now. Even cartoons have somehow fallen into this trap. Thank God I saw this. Just a smooth, emotional story you watch from beginning to end and have a soft smile when you see the end. Rickshaw Girl is a 2021 Bangladeshi family drama directed by Amitabh Reza Chowdhury, based on the acclaimed novel by Mitali Perkins. The film is a Bangladesh-USA-Germany co-production with a runtime of approximately 110 minutes
The Heavy Weight of Eldest Daughter Syndrome, For those who haven’t seen it yet, the film follows Naima (played brilliantly by Novera Rahman), a fiercely talented teenage girl living in a crowded, impoverished village in Bangladesh. Naima has a beautiful passion for painting traditional, vibrant alpona art, but her creative talents cannot pay for the daily food her family desperately needs. Her father is a proud but physically broken rickshaw driver who serves as the sole breadwinner for the household.The entire trajectory of their lives changes when her father falls dangerously ill and can no longer work. Facing starvation and mounting debts, Naima realizes the burden of survival falls on her. She leaves her rural home behind and heads into the overwhelming, bustling city of Dhaka to find work.
However, she immediately crashes into strict societal barriers—driving a rickshaw is strictly viewed as a man’s job. Refusing to back down, Naima cuts her hair, disguises herself as a boy, and takes up the grueling, backbreaking work of pulling her father’s prized rickshaw through the chaotic city streets to send money back home. Along her journey, she must navigate cruel exploitation, the constant fear of exposure, and a harsh urban landscape, all while trying to keep her artistic dreams alive.
This brings me to the second thing that completely struck a chord with me: the flawless portrayal of eldest daughter struggles.
If you are an eldest daughter, you already know that constant, heavy feeling of responsibility to take care of your family. There comes a terrifying moment in life when you look at your parents and realize they are old, overworked, and the entire world is suddenly falling squarely onto your shoulders. Would you wish for a simpler, easier life? Obviously. But what can you do? You are the eldest.
This raw portrayal of family duty is exactly why Rickshaw Girl is a movie I will easily recommend to everyone.
The lead actress, Novera Rahman, did a marvelous job with her emotions. I cried with her, got worried, and rooted for her throughout. I loved how the character was made strong and resilient—someone who has her own mind but is also a little girl at heart. Loved the scene where she meets her crush. You could literally see that her heart stopped beating and all the stars in her heart. And the scene where she receives the news about her dad—all these emotions were wonderfully shown, and she was able to make me feel all of them.
Since this was an adaptation (no, I haven’t read the book), I think they did a wonderful job. Well, that depends on the positive reviews I’ve read.
A Beautiful Tribute to Fathers Rickshaw Girl is a film that teaches resilience, breaking free, never giving up, and riding with the wind. But above all, it teaches pride.There is a unique magic in a father-daughter relationship that is always beautiful to witness. As someone who personally has the world’s best dad—who also happens to work in transport—this hit incredibly close to home. I have to thank that random guy on Reddit for recommending this gem.
I highly recommend this movie to all eldest daughters out there. Girl, go watch something both sad and lovely; it will heal your soul a little bit.
