I finished Black Clover Season 1 in a week. Thank god I was free, because the need to press “next episode” was overwhelming. The best thing about anime? Short episodes—but still packed with detail. Excuse me, I’m still new to this world, but I think I’ve already fallen hard.
Black Clover takes place in a world where magic is everything. People use magic for daily life, for combat—everything. The strongest mages become Magic Knights, elite warriors who protect the Clover Kingdom. The story kicks off with two orphans, Asta and Yuno, raised together in a small village church. Yuno is naturally gifted with powerful magic. Asta? He was born with no magic at all. In this world, that’s basically unheard of. Despite that, they make a promise: they’ll compete to become the Wizard King—the strongest Magic Knight in the kingdom.
The Grimoire Ceremony and Joining the Knights, When they turn 15, they attend the Grimoire Ceremony, where each person receives a grimoire that matches their magic. Yuno gets a rare four‑leaf clover grimoire, a symbol of great fortune. Asta gets nothing—until, out of nowhere, a mysterious five‑leaf clover grimoire chooses him. It contains an anti‑magic sword that only he can wield. Then comes the Magic Knight selection. Yuno obviously joins the most prestigious squad, the Golden Dawn. Asta, with his loud voice and zero magic, ends up with the Black Bulls—the squad everyone calls the worst.
Why the World Building Hooked Me; The world building was excellently done. Character introductions were exciting, and each character had their own story to tell. You just couldn’t judge anyone at first sight. The Black Bulls, especially—they look like a chaotic mess, but every member has a hidden depth. During the season, a mysterious group called the Eye of the Midnight Sun starts attacking the kingdom. They become the main threat, setting up bigger arcs that continue in later seasons. Also, the Wizard King himself? Total nerd. He’s ridiculously powerful, but he acts like a kid who gets excited over any cool magic. I loved that.
The Friendship I Wanted to Believe; Now, about Asta and Yuno’s friendship… I just didn’t feel it. It always felt like the writer wanted them to be friends, but the characters refused. I was left in that awkward situation where I could see they were supposed to be rivals‑turned‑brothers, but I didn’t believe it.
Asta: Loud, Annoying, and Impossible Not to Root For; Character‑wise, I really enjoyed Asta. I empathized with him, rooted for him to win at everything. But kid was loud. Like, keep it downnnn. I read that some people hated his constant proposals to Sister Lily, the nun who raised him. But honestly, I enjoyed how he used any opening to propose. The kid has been proposing since he could talk. To me, it showed how much he loved her—almost every kid has wanted to marry their mum or dad. At that orphanage, the other kids visibly disliked him. Yuno was preferred. Sister Lily was the one who gave him strength. So yeah, I didn’t mind the running gag.
Yuno: Too Perfect to Connect With; Meanwhile, I didn’t connect to Yuno at all. Don’t get me wrong, he’s perfect—and that’s exactly what’s wrong. Everything just felt handed to him. If he wins, good for him. If he loses, too bad. I just couldn’t care less. I hope later seasons give him more depth.
The Black Bulls: A Perfect Chaotic Family; Anyway, you’re going to love the Black Bulls. With every episode, you learn more about them. They’re chaotic, messy, and don’t follow any rules. But underneath all that, they’re a perfect family—the kind that accepts you exactly as you are. By the end of Season 1, I understood why so many people love this anime. It’s not perfect, but it’s got heart, action, and a main character who never stops screaming—and never stops trying.
i absolutely recommend this anime, especially if you’re new to anime like me, or just looking for a show with short episodes that make you hit “next” again and again, Black Clover Season 1 is a solid place to start. Have you watched Black Clover? What’s your favorite Black Bulls member? Let me know in the comments!
